Life Cycle of a Butterfly Created by: D. Baker
2
A butterfly starts out as a tiny egg attached to a leaf. egg
3
In just a few days the egg hatches and a caterpillar crawls out. The leaf becomes its food.
4
The caterpillar eats the leaf and sheds its skin until it becomes a full-grown caterpillar.
5
Soon the caterpillar attaches itself to the stem of a leaf and wraps itself in a chrysalis.
6
When the butterfly is fully grown inside the chrysalis, it begins to squeeze out.
7
When the butterfly first emerges from the chrysalis, its abdomen is large and full of fluid. Soon that fluid is pumped into the wings to make them bigger.
8
In a few hours, the butterfly’s wings will dry and begin to move slowly and it will take off in a new direction.
9
This amazing change from caterpillar to butterfly is called a “metamorphosis.”
