Challenges Today Agriculture based economy Primarily fishing, farming and raising live stock. Imports a lot from France (food and other products) Highly depends on France for help Remote location makes Mayotte undesirable for tourist. Unemployment rate is 25.4% (2005) Exports- ylang-ylang (perfume essence), vanilla, copra, coconuts, coffee, cinnamon– Approx. $6.5 million annually Imports- food, machinery and equipment, transportation equipment, metals, chemicals and Petroleum– Spends Approx. $341 million annually. Although Mayotte has a fast growing population, it lacks many of the economic demands to maintain its people. With a somewhat poor unemployment rate, lack of tourist revenue and natural resources, there are many challenges for this country.
