British East India Company gained control of all Indian trade (1757) Gained total control over trade in India so their country, Britain, would benefit.

British Government establishes rule over India (establishes the Raj) (1858) Great Britain was greatly prospered from the colonization of India. So they took complete control in 1858. To keep money flowing and prospering for their own country, Britain imposed several regulations and taxes.

India National Congress founded (1885) The Indian National Congress was often able to govern the subcontinent by consensus. However a few years before independence, they were split by factionalism.

Muslim League wants a separate Pakistani State (1930) This league was created to give underrepresented Muslims a voice. Muslims made up 20 percent of the population at that time.

Gandhi‘s Salt Marches (March 12, 1931) This was a protest against British salt tax. He lead several others with him to extract free salt from the sea.

Pakistan and India declare Independence (August 14, 1947) Disputes between India and Pakistan stem from the 1947 British partitioning of India into two independent nations. About ten million Muslims migrated to the new state of Pakistan.

First battle over Kashmir (August 26, 1947) Both Pakistan (religious) and India (legally) believe they have rights over the state of Kashmir which lead to the first of various conflicts over this state.

Gandhi assassinated (January 30, 1948) A Hindu radical assassinated Gandhi because he thought Gandhi was too sympathetic towards the Muslim population.

India becomes a democracy (1950) They adopted a constitution and became a democracy. They are presently the world’s largest democracy.
