DESIGN & CRAP WRA 210 1.15.13
2
AGENDA Time for Questions CRAP(py) Discussion Introduction to Module 2 Updating you course page
3
WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE?
4
CRAP! A tool to understand and create effective design Effective for all types of design, not just web Helps you make informed, smart design choices Get used to seeing it in all of your PW classes
5
CRAP- CONTRAST Similar items should look similar, but items that are different should be very different Helps an audience focus, let's them know what's important and what the point is Created using many types of design choices: Color Typography Space / sizing
6
CRAP - REPETITION Repeat similar patterns/groupings throughout a design Creates a sense of unity, continuity, purpose Created using many types of design choices: Color Typography Space / sizing Arrangement
7
CRAP - ALIGNMENT All objects in a design placed purposefully Creates visual, noticeable lines – clean Grids often help accomplish this (some programs have features called guides) Mostly concerned with individual elements - where repetition is concerned with the whole, alignment is mostly concerned with the page
8
CRAP – PROXIMITY Keep things related to each other close together - effective relationships, grouping Keep things not related far enough apart to create effective contrast Where does your eye go when you first see a design? Why does this happen?
9
FINDING GOOD CRAP Return to the reading for tonight http://www.presentationzen.com/chapter6_spread.pdf Where do we see the four principles here? What are some particularly good examples?
10
SO LET’S PRACTICE Break up into groups of 5 and use crap to make this into an awesome menu http://www.john-lauckner.com/wra210/wp- content/uploads/2012/09/menu.rtf Let's redesign using CRAP: how can we use principles to make a more effective menu? Contrast Repetition Alignment Proximity
11
NOW TO MODULE 2 Full description of Module 2 on website Review a portfolio looking just at CRAP principles Remember our class discussion and examples Answer questions in a Word doc, design this document Upload doc, update your course page
12
HATE TO INTERRUPT, BUT.. What are you finding? Volunteers?
13
FINISH MODULE 2, UPLOAD, AND UPDATE Upload module2.doc to your AFS web space Download index.html Edit your page Add a list item that links to module2.doc Save your page Upload page back to your AFS space Overwrite the existing index.html file with the copy you just updated
14
FOR NEXT TIME Finish Module 2, if not in class Finish Module 3 Please take these modules seriously Make sure you have strong and useful content Design your documents (you have the skills now). Make them look as if you they were going in your portfolio. Feel free to revise modules as you go Grades for modules will be coming shortly
