Where did I come from? Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction
3
What do we already know? By now, you should be very familiar with mitosis! Do you remember what happens?
4
What do we already know? WHY does mitosis occur? In multicellular organisms: In unicellular organisms: For growth and development (cell division!)growth For reproduction!
5
Ah HA! Mitosis = Asexual Reproduction YOU, a multicellular organism, are constantly reproducing…….. asexually!
6
Asexual Reproduction (Mitosis) mitosis How many offspring (daughter cells) are there in mitosis? How many parents (parent cells) are there? Ummm…Is this like…uh…that stuff we giggle about in health class?
7
Sexual Reproduction (Meiosis) How many offspring (daughter cells) are there in meiosis? How many parents (parent cells) are there?
8
Where did I come from? Meiosis = Sexual Reproduction Remember that both egg and sperm go through meiosis to be created
9
This is where you came from! Half the genetic information comes from each parent (sperm and egg). Meiosis = Sexual Reproduction
10
This is where you came from! Meiosis = Sexual Reproduction
11
Why you and sis look different! Meiosis = Sexual Reproduction
12
Meiosis Problems: nondisjunction Meiosis = Sexual Reproduction
13
Sex!!! (RATED G: none of you have to close your eyes) How many cells are there in the end? How many cells are there in the beginning?
14
So let’s compare… ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION SEXUAL REPRODUCTION One parent cellTwo parent cells Two offspring identical to the parent cell One offspring inherits traits from both parents
15
Asexual or Sexual Reproduction? An orange cat is bred with a black cat in hopes of producing a tortoiseshell cat. Sexual Reproduction: There are two parents and the offspring has inherited its coat color from both parents. The offspring is not identical to either parent.
16
Asexual or Sexual Reproduction? A cutting is taken from a red-flowered geranium and placed in water to develop roots. Once roots have grown, the new plant is placed in soil and grows to produce another red-flowered geranium. Asexual Reproduction: The offspring is reproduced directly from a single parent so it will be genetically identical.
17
Asexual or Sexual Reproduction? A red-flowered geranium with dull leaves is bred with a white-flowered geranium with shiny leaves, with a goal of producing a red-flowered geranium with shiny leaves. Sexual Reproduction: Two parents produce offspring with some traits from each parent.
18
Asexual or Sexual Reproduction? A male fish releases sperm cells into the water. One of the sperm unites with an egg from a female fish to form a new cell that grows into a new fish. Sexual Reproduction: Two parents reproduce an offspring with some traits from each parent.
19
Asexual or Sexual Reproduction? A small worm that lives in water splits in two and each half grows to normal size. The head end grows a tail, and the tail end grows a head. Asexual Reproduction: The offspring is reproduced directly from a single parent and will be identical to it.
20
Asexual or Sexual Reproduction? Sheep reproduce only by sexual reproduction in nature. Using modern technology, a clone of an adult sheep is produced. Cloning is Asexual Reproduction: Genes from only one parent are involved. Technology must be involved to enable this organism to reproduce asexually.
21
What would you do? If you were given an opportunity to clone yourself, would you do it?
