Indices of Deprivation 2015 For Telegraph Hill Ward

The Indices of Multiple Deprivation The English Indices of Deprivation measures relative deprivation in small areas in England called Super Output Areas (SOA). Most of the data used for these statistics are from 2012 and 2013. Data from this presentation is available from: http://dclgapps.communities.gov.uk/imd/idmap.html http://dclgapps.communities.gov.uk/imd/idmap.html The following maps show the ward of Telegraph Hill, split into 10 Super Output Areas. The tables identify the ranking of that SOA compared to a total of 32,844 SOAs in England. Those shaded orange are within the 20% most deprived. Those shaded red are within the 10% most deprived.

Summary of the data The data highlights (as might be expected) the Kender area and Honor Oak area as being within the 20% most deprived SOAs in England. Other parts of the ward score much higher. The IMD is broken down into different themes. Overall the area scores relatively well on themes such as Education and Training, and on Health and Disability. However, some pockets score badly on the themes ‘Barriers to Housing’ and ‘Income Deprivation affecting Children’. ‘Income Deprivation affecting older people’ shows particularly poor scores across the majority of the ward. Worryingly, the Income deprivation indicators are applied before housing costs are applied. Living Environment also scores badly across the ward, even in those areas which score well on the other measures. The table below defines what data is included in each of the themes.

What variables make up each theme? ThemeVariables included Income deprivation (22.5%) Adults and children in Income Support families Adults and children in income based JSA families Adults and children in income based ESA families Adults and children in Pension Credit families Adults and children In Child Tax and Working Tax Credit families below 60% median income not already counted Asylum seekers in England in receipt of subsistence support/ accommodation support Employment deprivation (22.5%) Claimants of JSA (18-64) Claimants of ESA (18-64) Claimants of Incapacity Benefit (18-64) Claimants of Severe Disablement Allowance (18-64) Claimants of Carer’s Allowance Health deprivation and Disability (13.5%) Years of potential life lost Comparative illness and disability ratio Acute morbidity Mood and anxiety disorders Crime (9.3%)Recorded crime rates for: Violence, Burglary; Theft; Criminal Damage.

Employment Deprivation Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOAEmployment Kender (006A)5550 Somerville (006B)9973 Troutbeck (006C)21,433 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)16,004 Gellaty Rd (006E)10,779 Aspinal Rd (010C)19,130 Walbutton Rd (010D)13,504 Mantle rd(010E)20,963 Frendsbury rd (010A)4055 Turnham Road(010B)4864 Employment deprivation is largely similar to the overall IMD score, with 3 areas coming within the 20% most deprived in England.

Education, Skills and Training Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOAEducation Kender (006A)12,508 Somerville (006B)21,621 Troutbeck (006C)28,766 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)30,196 Gellaty Rd (006E)27,850 Aspinal Rd (010C)28,216 Walbutton Rd (010D)22,834 Mantle rd(010E)25,153 Frendsbury rd (010A)17,931 Turnham Road(010B)6353 Telegraph Hill scores very well on Education and Training. Some areas are within the 10% least deprived. Only the Honor Oak area shows a low score on Education.

Health and Disability Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOAHealth Kender (006A)6605 Somerville (006B)9730 Troutbeck (006C)21,223 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)17,968 Gellaty Rd (006E)16,545 Aspinal Rd (010C)19,340 Walbutton Rd (010D)14,169 Mantle rd(010E)15,349 Frendsbury rd (010A)6835 Turnham Road(010B)8924 Overall, the scores for Health and disability are OK. Kender and Honor Oak areas score less well than the rest, but this is outside of the 20% most deprived in England.

Crime Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOACrime Kender (006A)4621 Somerville (006B)5212 Troutbeck (006C)5392 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)7734 Gellaty Rd (006E)7750 Aspinal Rd (010C)7843 Walbutton Rd (010D)13,708 Mantle rd(010E)7930 Frendsbury rd (010A)7284 Turnham Road(010B)12412 Crime scores are generally poor (worst 20%) in the area around Queens Road, although the areas immediately around the whole area (New Cross, Brockley, Nunhead Cemetery) are generally worse, therefore this remains an issue for the area as a whole.

Barriers to Housing Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOAHousing Kender (006A)2093 Somerville (006B)6190 Troutbeck (006C)7840 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)13,841 Gellaty Rd (006E)7900 Aspinal Rd (010C)11,950 Walbutton Rd (010D)9468 Mantle rd(010E)10,336 Frendsbury rd (010A)3391 Turnham Road(010B)3159 Barriers to housing are a significant issue in Honor Oak and Kender areas. This includes overcrowding, homelessness and housing costs

Living Environment Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOAEnvironment Kender (006A)5286 Somerville (006B)4753 Troutbeck (006C)3068 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)2347 Gellaty Rd (006E)4280 Aspinal Rd (010C)7488 Walbutton Rd (010D)4167 Mantle rd(010E)8051 Frendsbury rd (010A)9453 Turnham Road(010B)13,692 Across the ward as a whole, the scores on Living Environment are low, with 6/10 of the SOAs coming within the worst 20% and 2/10 within the worst 10%. This includes variables on air pollution, road accidents, housing quality and central heating. Unusually, Honor Oak actually scores highest here.

Income Deprivation Affecting Children Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOAIncome affecting children Kender (006A)3048 Somerville (006B)5350 Troutbeck (006C)13,771 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)15,282 Gellaty Rd (006E)8186 Aspinal Rd (010C)8660 Walbutton Rd (010D)8977 Mantle rd(010E)10,375 Frendsbury rd (010A)3848 Turnham Road(010B)5863 The income deprivation affecting children is cause for concern, as this measure doesn’t take into account the high housing costs, therefore combined with this, the impact on deprivation is considerably increased.

Income Dep Affecting Older People Rank out of 32,844 SOAs in England, Amber is 20% most deprived, and Red is 10% most deprived LSOAIncome affecting older people Kender (006A)937 Somerville (006B)5961 Troutbeck (006C)7618 Arbuthnot Rd (006D)11,513 Gellaty Rd (006E)11,831 Aspinal Rd (010C)5456 Walbutton Rd (010D)8587 Mantle rd(010E)6460 Frendsbury rd (010A)494 Turnham Road(010B)2112 Income deprivation affecting older people is a considerable issue for concern across the ward, with 6/10 SOAs being within the 20% most deprived, and 3/10 within the worst 10%. Frendsbury is effectively within the 1.5% most deprived on this score across England. And this does not include housing costs.
