2
Palm Sunday was the day that Jesus publicly announced to the Jews that their Savior and King had arrived.
3
Prophecy foretold the day when the Messiah would come and consequently be “cut off”, rejected by the people. Zech 9:9; Isa 62:11; Psa 118:26-27 with Dan 9:24-25
4
Zech 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
5
Daniel’s three fold prophecy; 1) The time frame of Israel’s captivity. 2) The First Advent of our Lord when he would be “cutoff”. 3) The duration of the Tribulation with the revealing of the Antichrist in the middle.
6
Neh 2:4-8, begins the counting for the time of “Messiah to be cutoff”, (rejected), as prophesized by Daniel.
7
Neh 2:4-8 w/ Dan 9:24-26 7 weeks = 49 years 62 weeks = 434 years 69 weeks = 483 years 483 yrs. x 360 days/year = 173,880 days (360 day Jewish calendar) Nisan 1 (March 14), 445 BC to April 6, 32 AD Palm Sunday “Cutting off of Messiah” = 173,880 days
8
The 483 Years in the Jewish and Julian Calendar (7 x 7) + (62 x 7) years = 483 years 483 years x 360 (Jewish) days = 173,880 days 445 B.C. to A.D. 32 = 476 years † 476 years x 365 (Julian) years = 173,740 days 173,740 days + 116 days in leap years ‡ + 116 days in leap years ‡ + 24 March 14 to April 6 + 24 March 14 to April 6 173,880 days † Since only one year expired between 1 B.C. and A.D. 1, the total is 476, not 477. ‡ A total of 476 years divided by four (a leap year every four years) gives 119 additional days. But three days must be subtracted from 119 because centennial years are not leap years, though every 400 th year is a leap year.
9
The fulfillment of this prophecy is recorded in each of the gospels. Mat 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-50
10
Christ’s procession was a type of victor’s procession. It was a procession indicating the victory to come.
11
Zech 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
12
Isa 62:11, “Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth, say to the daughter of Zion, “Lo, your salvation comes; Behold His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.”
13
Zech 9:9 is compared with and fulfilled in the gospel accounts found in Mat 21:5; Mark 11:10; John 12:14.
14
Just as Satan influenced the woman in the Garden of Eden to confound and confuse God’s Word in the mentality of her soul in Gen 3:1-3, he did so with the Jews of Jesus’ time.
15
Satan had parlayed the Hebrew’s lack of concentration and faithfulness towards the Word of God and Occupation with the Person of Christ with their negative volition.
16
They were completely confounded as to who He was and in emotional revolt of the soul praised Him as the one who would solve their problem of Roman occupation.
17
In their arrogance they completely forgot about their need for a savior to free them from the slave market of sin. Compare Psa 118:22-29 with Mat 21:9; Mark 11:9; Luke 19:38; John 12:13.
18
John tells us what was truly going on in the hearts of the people of Jerusalem. John 12:9-50
19
John 12:16, “These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him.”
20
They wanted to be freed from the tyranny of Rome. They did not want a martyr for soul salvation. That is why Jesus wept when approaching the city. Luke 19:41-42
