Often lived in camps called boomtowns.  Gold Camps were lawless, relied on vigilantes for justice.  Gold Rush more than doubled the world’s supply of gold. Discovery of gold led to rapid growth and eventual statehood for California

2  The Mormons settled in Utah.  Joseph Smith founded the Mormon Church, received the ideas of Mormonism by an angel.  Mormon migration 1846, Brigham Young led them to Utah  Largest single migration in American History. a. 12,000 Mormons made the trek. b. The Mormon Trail. A Religious Refuge in Utah

3  Rapid growth in both population and economic activity.  Need for more effective government, resulting in California writing a constitution and statehood in 1850. * California and Texas are the only two states, to gain statehood without territorial status.  Utah did not become a state until 1896, due to religious differences.
