Safety Rules Review Where is the fire extinguisher? Where is the eye wash? Where do we meet in case of a fire? Where is the shower? Where is the fire blanket? Where is the phone? Where is your nearest exit?
31
Scientific Method Date:
32
Chemistry Definition: is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes. Rewrite this definition in terms that an elementary student would understand.
33
Scientific Method Write the 6 steps of the scientific method 1.State the problem What will you be investigating? 2.Gather information What research is necessary to investigate problem? 3.Hypothesis A tentative explanation of some regularity of nature.
34
4.Experiment Completing the investigation. 5.Record and Analyze Data Collecting the data to prove a point! 6.Conclusions What does all the data mean?
35
Beyond the Scientific Method A theory is a TESTED explanation of basic natural phenomena. A Scientific law is a theory proven correct and there are no exceptions.
36
Scientific Method in motion Watch this short clip of Jack, Jack Attack Look for the use of the scientific method.
37
Observations (data) Could be : qualitative – describe color, odor, shape, etc… quantitative – measured data: temperature, pressure, volume, mass, length Which is better?
38
Variables May be: independent – controlled variable (time, temperature) (X-axis) dependent – changes depending on independent variable (Y-axis) Need a control – a standard to compare the data to.
39
Laboratory Equipment We will be using lots of equipment this trimester. Please roam through the colored posters to discover what is stored in each section. Be prepared to share your findings!
