A Motherboard A motherboard is a board where all the principle connections, wires and parts secure to. Apart from that the motherboard doesn’t do much.

A CPU A CPU (Central Programming Unit) is a piece of hardware that does all the thinking like the data processing. It is ultimately the brains to the whole computer.

Memory – Storage & Working Storage- The hard drive is the storage device for all the information that is saved. Working- Working memory (also known as the RAM – random access memory) is where all the files that are needed to be open, are temporarily stored. This gets cleared every time the device is turned off, but the hard drive is not.

An Operating System Is a software, or programming code, that controls the computers basic functions. This is how devices interact, either by files or software – e.g. Mountain Lion, Microsoft 7, iOS etc.

Connectivity The ability to connect with to other systems or applications through things like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, 3G and so on (these could be wireless or wired). This how we connect to the world through our devices.

Input & Output Input is the systems that we connect to our device to input information into them – these can be keyboards, a mouse, microphones and cameras. Output is the place that power or information leaves from external device connected to the main source (computer or iPad). There are tools that are both input and output information such as; an iPad screen or projector.
