SUNFLOWERS AND ACID RAIN TALENT 21 PROJECT BY: NAILAH JONES DATE: MAY 4 2012 PERIOD : 3
2
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this experiment was to find out while doing this experiment I have gathered plenty information about plants such as the fact that when you water the plant, it would be better to use vinegar water instead of using tap water. I also learned that you are supposed to give the plant lots of sunlight, you cant over water the plant because the plant will not grow. The control in this experiment was using tap water The variable in this experiment was using polluted water

Materials Plastic cup super growing pellets Triple beam balance scale Sunflower seeds Water or 10% vinegar water Ruler Data sheet MATERIALS

1.Add super growing pellets to cup. 2.Add 3 tablespoons of water to expand. 3.Plant 3 seeds per cup. 4.Weigh cup on triple beam balance. Record weight. 5.Add tap water or vinegar water to cup. Weigh again and record data. 6.Cup will be placed under grow light. 7.Observe the container daily and note any indications of growth(by observations and measurement) and compare to other containers in the experiment. While observing indicate any special care given to the plant. (Did you need to add more or less water? Did you need to rotate the plant?) 8.Record observations, measurements, and comments in the plant growth diary. Once the plant begins to grow, you will need to draw a detailed picture of the plant including the appearance of leaves and stems. 9.Each day, repeat steps 3 through 8. METHODS

ASK A QUESTION The purpose of this experiment was to find out … (Include background information about requirements for plant growth and plant needs- your textbook would be a good place to begin gathering background information. Include information about the plant or the variable you used to help make your plant go and its importance in this experiment. My question: what type of water will make the seed plant grow larger?
7
STATE YOUR HYPOTHESIS If I plant a sunflower seed I would think that in just about a week my plant will grow a lot more with tap water, than it would if I put polluted water in my plant.
8
IDENTIFY CONTROL & VARIABLE In this talent 21 project the control group used tap water to grow their plant and the experimental group used polluted water to grow their plant.
9
TEST YOUR HYPOTHESIS If I add polluted water to my sunflower seed, then it will grow a lot more because of all of the nutrients and vitamins in the vinegar.
10
COLLECT & RECORD YOUR DATA
11
INTERPRET YOUR DATA This is where you put your analysis. The results showed that my plant might have needed less water or more sunlight. As part of this experiment there may have been variables or scientific errors that could have affected the growth of the plants and the outcome of this experiment. The variables affecting the results may have been Scientific errors that could have occurred and affected the results of thinking that my plant will grow more with tap water but it did not.
12
STATE YOUR CONCLUSION The results of this lab did not support the initial hypothesis I think that my plant did not grow because the tap water was not nutritious enough for my plant. Some things that were learned from this experiment were I learned that when you water a plant it is better to use vinegar. water than tap water. This experiment could be extended in the future by a natural step that I have investigated while doing this project was seeing the plant NOT grow after we kept putting the tap water in the plant.
