Disasters  Earthquake in Java – how would you survive?

Disasters Other disasters – caused by Tsunami, Hurricane, Drought or Widespread Flooding

Disasters Imagine being left with no home, no safe water to drink, and none of your belongings

Water-Survival Box – what is it?  Its main purpose is to filter water to make it fit to drink and prevent people from dying of thirst or water-borne diseases

Water-Survival Box – what’s in it?  Survival equipment: filter pack for clean water; items for eating and drinking; health and hygiene; shelter and tools; household items; but no food and no clothing (provided by others)

Water-Survival Box – what’s it cost?  £105 – includes box, lid, filtration pack, all contents, warehousing and transportation  Less than the cost of most IPODs or MP3 Players or MP3 Players

Tsunami - 2004 India Sri Lanka Indonesia Millions left homeless, without safe water, and lost all belongings England and Europe Red Sea Africa

Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge District 1200  The Water-Survival Box was developed after the tsunami in the Indian Ocean when we sent 3,200 waterboxes to India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia  But that operation took us 6 months!  We realised that in the case of most disasters aid needs to arrive as soon as possible after disaster strikes

Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge District 1200  Indonesia is about 10,000 miles away from England  Sending Water-Survival Boxes by sea takes from 4 to 6 weeks from leaving England to arriving in Indonesia  They then have to be taken by plane or lorry to the disaster area - this can take another week or two  Is this the only solution?  and what use is it to survivors?

Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge District 1200  We realised that help also needs to be available as soon as possible after disaster strikes  Pack the boxes in advance and replace that picture of a ship with the picture of a plane?

Typhoons in the Philippines, December, 2006 Indonesia 18 villages were swept away by mudslides and widespread flooding - 80,000 people were left homeless, 1.5 million without safe water, and most lost all their belongings Philippines China Australia Africa England and Europe

Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge District 1200  We already had 60 boxes packed  We sent them by air  It took them just 4 days to arrive in the Philippines  Obviously it cost more to send by air  We still had to arrange transport from Manila airport to the disaster zone

Jenny Baldarana and her family lost everything in the Philippines typhoon disaster  we helped them  Photo courtesy of the ShelterBox Trust

Family with Water-Survival Box – after the devastating typhoons in the Philippines  we helped them too

WILL YOU HELP US TO HELP MORE PEOPLE LIKE THEM?

Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge District 1200  Since the tsunami we estimate we have helped more than 17,000 people in terms of providing them with a safe drinking water supply for 4 months each  That’s equivalent to 10% of the population of B&NES or 170% of the capacity of the Recreation Ground!  We have also provided them with all the other essential survival items

Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge District 1200 It has been achieved by working with:  Wirksworth Rotary Club (Aquabox)  Rotary Clubs throughout District 1200  Other Rotary Clubs  The community

Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge District 1200 Going forward we seek to:  To develop a strong brand to complement the ‘ShelterBox’ in the provision of immediate relief  To be as professional as ‘ShelterBox’  To work with all Rotary Clubs in the raising of necessary funds  Support thousands more victims of disaster
