Date: November 16, 2015 Aim #25: How are cells classified? HW: 1)Cheese Lab due Tomorrow Do Now: Warm-Up Notebook DateTitle of Activity Page # 11/16Viruses46 Happy Birthday Dylan!!!
2
Compare and contrast these two cars? SIMPLE COMPLEX
3
How do these cells compare? SIMPLE COMPLEX
4
1) Cells are broken down into two main classes: Cells ProkaryoticEukaryotic
5
Prokaryotes: Were probably the first life forms to appear on earth 3.5 billion years ago Harsh Early Earth What were the conditions on Earth at this time? 1)Hot 2)Little Oxygen 3)Abundant Lightning 4) Volcanic Activity
6
Miller and Urey in 1953
7
Steps: 1.Take molecules thought to be present in Earth’s early atmosphere: Methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H2), and water H2O). 2.Run continuous electric current through the system: this simulate lightening storms believed to be common on early earth 3.After one week: 10-15 % of C was now in the form of organic compounds. 2% of C had formed some amino acids. 4.Importance: organic compounds like amino acids could be made easily under the conditions that scientist believed to be present on early earth.
8
Why do you think Prokaryotes were the first life forms on earth? 1)Simple Structures 2)Their ability to tolerate harsh environments 3)Their ability to adapt to changing environments
9
Read as Class Endosymbiosis

ENDOSYMBIOTIC THEORY

TED- How we think cells evolved? http://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-we-think-complex-cells-evolved-adam- jacobson
12
What are some features of prokaryotes? 1)Prokaryotes have NO NUCLEUS!! 2) Have few organelles (mini-organs) 3) PROKARYOTES = BACTERIA ** Although prokaryotes do not have nuclei, they do have DNA.
13
What organisms are made up of eukaryotic cells? Plants AnimalsFungi Protists All these living things are made up of Eukaryotic Cells
14
What are some features of typical eukaryotic cells? 1) They are more complex 2) Appeared later on earth 3) They have nuclei 4) They are larger 5) Have more organelles 6) Have membrane bound organelles

16
CELL TYPES PROKARYOTIC HAVE only a few ORGANELLES HAVE NO NUCLEUS PRIMITIVE CELLS Only Bacteria EUKARYOTIC HAVE ORGANELLES HAVE NUCLEUS MODERN CELLS All other living things: animals, plants, fungi, protist (unicellular organisms)
