2 SOLDIER FOR LIFE - TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SDL-TAP)
Soldier for Life connects Army, governmental, and community efforts to build relationships that facilitate successful reintegration of our Soldiers, Retired Soldiers, Veterans, and their Families in order to keep them Army Strong and instill their values, ethos, and leadership within communities. You’ve heard, “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” But have you heard of “Soldier for Life?” Soldier for Life is the Army’s holistic approach to the military lifecycle of a Soldier. The Army’s goal is to change the Army culture so that Soldiers will know that when they joined the Army team - the ultimate team - they will always be a part of our team. The Army will support Soldiers not only while they serve, but during all phases of the Soldier lifecycle. The U.S. Army takes care of teammates by ensuring Soldiers START STRONG, SERVE STRONG, REINTEGRATE STRONG so they REMAIN ARMY STRONG serving their communities after they leave the Army. The U.S. Army's strategic imperative of sustaining the All Volunteer Army is directly affected by how well the veterans reintegrate back into the communities and share their message of pride for all that the Army helped them accomplish. Gen. George Washington said: “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.” Why Soldier for Life? Service: America’s Army answered the Nation’s call following 9/11 and has been engaged in combat operations for more than 12 years, the longest period in our history. Honor: Our Soldiers, Veterans, and Families have earned the support of a grateful Nation. We must honor their service and sacrifice. Transition: 130,000 Active, Guard, and Reserve Soldiers will reintegrate into communities each year, more than 1 million over the next 10 years. --- What is the program’s Mission and Endstate? 6 Soldier for Life Initiatives - Army
Soldier Life Cycle – Reinforces lifelong learning, transition readiness, and career readiness throughout active service. Soldier for Life -Transition Assistance Program – The VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 resulted in a standardized transition assistance program curriculum, conducted in partnership with the Department of Labor and the Veterans Administration, mandatory for all separating Service members. Veteran unemployment is at a 7-year low, and is comparable to the civilian sector. Soldier for Life Centers – Established across all Army installations to provide in-service, pre-transition, and post-transition resources. Career Skills Programs (CSPs) – CSPs provide job training for transitioning Soldiers through internships with private industry. 48 CSPs are approved across Army. Soldier for Life Buttons and Badges – Allows Veterans and Retirees to display their continued service as “Soldiers for Life” after leaving active duty

7 Soldier for Life Initiatives - FLW
Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program – The FLW SFL-TAP office provides world-class education, training, counseling, and employment assistance that enables over 1,200 FLW Service members to “Reintegrate Strong”, career ready, every year. 1,252 FLW Soldiers are currently enrolled in SFL-TAP. Arrive Strong – Our innovative 7-day program integrates welcome, reception, orientation, resiliency, soldier life cycle, and processing requirements for Soldiers and Families arriving to FLW. “Arrive Strong” has been noted as an IMCOM “best practice” and is being considered for Army-wide implementation. Career Skills Programs (CSPs) – 21 CSPs are under development at FLW. FLW is also surveying SFL-TAP enrollees to assess their CSP needs. We are working with IMCOM to update Army PTDY policy to allow for off-site CSPs and an enterprise approach. National Transition Summit – The National Transition Summit will return to Fort Leonard Wood May 2015 in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes program. Last year’s summit resulted in over 200 job offers for transitioning Service members and Spouses.
