What is Satire? Satire: A literary work that ridicules its subject through the use of various techniques Uses humor to expose and ridicule human vice and folly Satire is meant to inspire reform or change one’s opinion about a subject/topic Who is the best satirist from the period to The Enlightenment? Satirical Techniques: Exaggeration: To enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen Incongruity: To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings Irony: Contrast between reality and appearance. The outcome is the opposite of what is expected to happen Saying one thing, but the meaning is the opposite (i.e. sarcasm) Parody-To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place or thing Handout!
