Individual versus Society
Themes of The Stranger Individual versus Society The needs and wants of the individual person go against the expectations of their society/ community Can you think of examples from your life where what people want is in contention with societal expectations? How might this concept relate to Existentialism?
2
Themes of The Stranger Justice versus Law Are they the same thing?
What are the differences between the two? Think of some examples from real life.
3
What is an antihero? First let’s define a hero.
Think of a few examples. What qualities does a hero possess? Antihero not the opposite of a hero. It is a protagonist who goes against our typical definitions of a hero. He or she may still have some heroic qualities, but doesn’t respond in the same way a hero would.

Time by Pink Floyd Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
5
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today And then the one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
6
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking And racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older And shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say
7
Home, home again I like to be here when I can When I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire Far away, across the field, tolling on the iron bell Calls the faithful to their knees And hear the softly spoken magic spell

Fred Jones Part 2 by Ben Folds
Fred sits alone at his desk in the dark There's an awkward young shadow that waits in the hall He's cleared all his things and he's put them in boxes Things that remind him: 'Life has been good‘ Twenty-five years He's worked at the paper A man's here to take him downstairs And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones …It's time
9
There was no party, there were no songs
'Cause today's just a day like the day that he started No one is left here that knows his first name And life barrels on like a runaway train Where the passengers change They don't change anything You get off; someone else can get on And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones It's time
10
Streetlight shines through the shades
Casting lines on the floor, and lines on his face He reflects on the day Fred gets his paints out and goes to the basement Projecting some slides onto a plain white Canvas and traces It, fills in the spaces He turns off the slides, and it doesn't look right Yeah, and all of these bastards have taken his place He's forgotten but not yet gone And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones… It's time

THE ROLLING STONES Satisfaction
I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction 'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try I can't get no, I can't get no When I'm drivin' in my car And that man comes on the radio And he's tellin' me more and more About some useless information Supposed to fire my imagination I can't get no, oh no no no Hey hey hey, that's what I say
12
I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction 'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try I can't get no, I can't get no When I'm watchin' my TV And that man comes on to tell me How white my shirts can be But he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke The same cigarrettes as me I can't get no, oh no no no Hey hey hey, that's what I say
13
I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no girl reaction Cause I try and I try and I try and I try I can't get no, I can't get no When I'm ridin' round the world And I'm doin' this and I'm signing that And I'm tryin' to make some girl Who tells me baby better come back later next week Cause you see I'm on losing streak

Killing An Arab By The Cure
Standing on the beach with a gun in my hand Staring at the sea. Staring at the sand Staring down the barrel At the Arab on the ground I can see his open mouth But I hear no sound I'm alive I'm dead I'm the stranger Killing an Arab
15
I'm alive I'm dead I'm the stranger Killing an Arab
I can turn And walk away Or I can fire the gun Staring at the sky Staring at the sun Whichever I chose It amounts to the same Absolutely nothing I'm alive I'm dead I'm the stranger Killing an Arab
16
I feel the steel butt jump Smooth in my hand Staring at the sea Staring at the sand Staring at myself Reflected in the eyes Of the dead man on the beach The dead man on the beach I'm alive I'm dead I'm the stranger Killing an Arab
