Matter: It’s what the world’s made of.
3
The scientific name given to all materials is called matter Matter is anything which occupies space and has mass. Solids, liquids and gases occupy space and have mass, so solids, liquids and gases are states of matter.
4
What do you know about matter? Solid s Liquids Gasses
5
Solids Solids hold their own shape. Cannot Flow Cannot be compressed. Read more!
6
Liquids Liquids take the shape of their container. Can Flow Cannot be compressed. Read more!
7
Gases Gasses spread out to fill the entire space given. Can flow Can be compressed Read more!
8
Does Gas have mass? (b) (a) Set up the apparatus as shown in figure (a). 1.Record the mass of the “empty” balloon. 2.Blow up the balloon just like in figure (b). 3.Record the mass of the inflated balloon. Make sure the balance is set to grams!!
9
STATES of matter? What would it take for matter to move from one state to another?
10
Energy determines the state!
11
Particles in Solids: Are packed tightly together Have very little energy Held in fixed position by bonds
12
Particles in Liquids: Are loosely packed Have medium energy levels
13
Particles in Gasses: Move freely Have LOTS of energy
14
Mixtures may be in different phases Solid? Liquid? Gas?
15
Add or Subtract Energy... When energy is added, particles move faster! When energy is taken away, particles move slower!
16
Solid + Energy = ? When energy is added to solids, they become liquids! Melting
17
Liquid + Energy = ? When energy is added to liquids, they become gasses! Boiling
18
Changing States There are several names for matter changing states: State change Phase change Physical change
19
Heating a solid Temperature Time Melting point Boiling point WATER 0oC0oC 100 o C
