Bell work What is the Statue of Liberty? Is it literally made out of liberty? What’s one thing in your life/culture that symbolizes your happiness, who you are, or what you like? Ex: A snow Globe, a blanket, a scent, a song, etc.

What symbols stand for.. An object, event, person, color, or animal that has attached meaning and significan ce.

Where does Symbolism come from? Inherited or invented Ex. Lion = power (inherited) Ex. Peter Pan = eternal childhood (invented)

Why are symbols created? Writers use the symbols to create layers of meaning that words cannot do alone. This causes you to read “between the lines.

Allegory? A story in which characters, settings, and actions stand for something beyond themselves.

Practice! What do each of the following symbolize? A snake A black cat Four-leaf clover An upside down flag Evil Bad luck Good luck "...as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."
