HOW THE FIRST WORLD WAR IS REFLECTED IN RUSSIAN ART

The events in the battlefields during the First World War didn’t leave Russian artists indifferent. For example, this response can be seen in the paintings by Karyagin and Petrov-Vodkin.

PYOTR PAVLOVICH KARYAGIN The painter Pyotr Karyagin was a member of the so-called Trophy commision which was founded by the emperor Nicolay II at the end of 1914. Battle theme was close to him. His first sketches shown in academic exhibitions in 1908 and 1912, were associated with military subjects. Later, he repeatedly turned to them in his works. «The horror of war. Reached! (Russian infantry attack on the German trenches)».

KUZMA SERGEEVICH PETROV-VODKIN «THE LINE OF FIRE» This canvas was painted in 1916, under the impression of the First World War battle scenes. It was inspired by a furious attack of the Russian soldiers.

Virgin Mary was created in 1914-1915 in the midst of the First World War. This is an icon painting. It is intended for softening evil hearts. Before such icons people pray to God to stop the war. This is the artist's emotional response to the events of the war. The picture is small but perceived as a monumental work. This is one of the most profound images created by Petrov Vodkin.
