1 Pitiless Poaching By: Mimi Wade That is an anti-poaching sign What is a poacher? What do they do that is harmful? Why are people fighting against them? What do poachers do that is so bad? How are they linked with animals?

2 Why the killing? Listen to this, a four month old rhino calf was found sitting next to his mothers dead body. Her face was hacked off by poachers. The worst part is that most young animals who lost their mothers because of poaching are not found by people. The Rhino population has gone down drastically. Just see how many rhinos have been killed by poachers in the past couple of years ! And that is only one species! e species! Poachers: Someone who illegally hunts animals. Population: The amount of living things that stay/live in one area. Drastically: Something going up or down rapidly. Poachers: Someone who illegally hunts animals. 3 In my opinion, no. But if you asked that question to a poacher the answer would almost positively be “yes”. You can just imagine the normal excuses, “ I had to feed my family” or “I had no choice”. Most of those poachers are lying, but a minor amount of all those poachers are telling the truth. What do you think? Does a dollar bill mean more than a life to you? An elephant in Masai Mara national park.

4 It is hard to say. Obviously in order to punish poachers we have to catch them first. Obama is attempting to help Africa, but right now America should try to find a different way to support and help Africa with their “little” poaching problem. Park rangers are punished the absolute most. They volunteer to monitor the vast jungles and plains of Africa. Yet they too get killed by poachers, daily. Also, park rangers sadly have to see up to 70 elephant carcasses in one day! This proves that park rangers, who volunteer to keep the wild animals of Africa are punished the most. 5 Trafficking Tusks One day in Masai Mara a young elephant was found sitting next to his mothers carcass. The elephants mothers face had a poisoned spear locked in her cheek. The mothers tusks were gone. Trafficking animals body parts is one of the main ways poachers are caught. When they are, their punishments are extreme. If you are lucky you escape with 10 years in prison. If you are not, which is likely, you are in jail for 15 years or more.

6 To Conclude… Hundreds of millions of animals are killed by poachers each year. In 2013 more than 20,000 African elephants were killed. China and the US are the top markets of illegal ivory trade. We need to protect the animals of the world and save them from becoming history.
