Algebra Review “Solving Equations” September 20 th 2010
2
Inverse Operations… To solve algebraic equations, we use inverse operations. To get the variable by itself, we do the opposite. –Ex: subtraction gets rid of addition multiplication gets rid of division Balancing the Equation… Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other
3
One-Step Equations 3x = 12x – 5 = 2 x/2 = 61 + x = 4
4
Two-Step Equations 2x – 1 = 115 – 3x = 20
5
Multi-Step Equations 4( x – 1 ) = 202 ( 3x + 2 ) + 5 = 21
6
Equations w/ Variable on Both Sides 3x – 6 = 5x + 87x + 10 = x - 2
