What can I do with Functions? Today you will combine functions using a variety of operations, including compositions and inverses. You will also review inverse functions and notation.

But first… Homework Quiz 1.1.2 Binders up You may use your homework 1-23 to 30 You have 7 minutes

Functions Functions are a major component of any advanced math course. We need to know how to recognize the notation, how to work with combining functions, and how to undo a function. When we “undo” a function, we are finding its inverse.

a.Explain in words what this machine does to a number. b.Suppose it were possible to turn the crank the opposite direction, causing the machine to pull 7 back up into it. What do you think would come out the top? Explain.
5
c. Suppose Anita wants to build another machine that will “undo” the effects of her first function machine. That is, she wants a machine that will take seven and turn it back into three, take nine and turn it back into four, and so on. Write a rule that she should program into this new machine to make it do this.
6
Function Machines Your team will get four function machines. Your team’s job is to get a specific output by putting those machines in a particular order so that one machine’s output becomes the next machine’s input.
7
Function Machines In what order should you stack the machines so that when 6 is dropped into the first machine, and all 4 machines have had their effect, the last machine’s output is 11? What order will result in a final output of 131065 when the first input is 64? Input: -34 Output: -49
