Aims The aim of this workshop is to familiarise parents with the methods we use for calculations with children working in key stage 2 (years 3 – 6). Please see your child’s class teacher for any clarification or if you have any questions on the teaching of numeracy please speak to Mr Law

Main aims of the curriculum
The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions National curriculum in England: mathematics programmes of study DfE

Headlines ! 75% of new curriculum involves number. It is assumed that each year group continues to use the maths from the previous years, but the maths from the previous year does NOT appear in the next year’s programme of study. This means that children cannot move onto the next year groups programme until they have secured the previous programme of study.

Mastery – Year 3 Three pandas ate 25 bamboo sticks. Each of them ate a different odd number of bamboo sticks. How many bamboo sticks did they each eat? Find as many ways as you can to do it.
13
Mastery – Year 6 Work out the missing number:
= _____
14
Multiplication By year 4 children expected to know all times tables up to 12x12. Know relationship between them i.e. 12 x 4 = x and 2 x 4 Know that multiplication can be done in any order 12x4 and 4x12 give same answer. Use this to solve problems such as 5 x 6 x 9 x 2 =
15
Understanding Multiplication
Using known facts – fact families, factor etc 4x6 = 24 6x4 = 24 6 = 4 = 6
16
Using numicon – Concrete resource
6x4 = 4x6=
17
Using numicon for division
Practical example 786 divide 6 = 6 786
