Tuesday – December 6, Mr. Lombardi Aim: How did the Caste System organize Hindu society? Do Now: What are your own personal opinions and reflections of India’s caste system? (Do you agree with it? Do you understand why they created it? What are some advantages of it? What are some disadvantages of it?) – Your response should be one full paragraph

2 Hinduism – the common religion of India, based upon the religion of the Aryan settlers.
Deity – a god-like character or figure. Karma – the idea that each person is rewarded or punished by fate according to that person's actions. Dharma – the moral balance of all things. Reincarnation – being “born again” into a new life cycle. Matriarchy – Social system where the mother is the head of the family. Patriarchy – Social system where the father is the head of the family.

4 Caste System Origins: Rules:
Began in the Hindu religion, based on writings in the Vedas (a Hindu holy book). Rules: A person was born into their caste and could not change it during their life (only in their next reincarnated life). Only following of caste rules would bring good Karma. Different caste members were not allowed to intermarry or work together. Untouchables were considered so “unclean” that they were outside the caste system (outcasts)
