4 What you really need to know! To estimate a percent of a number, you can use a fraction or a multiple of 10% or 1%.

5 What you really need to know! 10% makes a number one digit smaller! 1% makes a number two digits smaller!

7 Example 1: Estimate 61% of 407. 60% of 400 10% of 400 = 40 6 x 40 = 240

8 Example 2: Estimate 18% of 296. 20% of 300 10% of 300 = 30 2 x 30 = 60

9 Example 3: Estimate 59% of 500. 60% of 500 10% of 500 = 50 6 x 50 is 300

10 Example 4: Estimate 173% of 60. 170% of 60 17 x 6 10% of 60 = 6 102

11 Example 5: Estimate 1/3% of 898. 1% of 900 1/3% is (1÷3)%, so… 1% x 900 = 9 9 ÷ 3 3

12 Example 6: Last season 96,081 people were in attendance at a college football game. About 0.25% of those were reporters from newspapers and television and radio stations. About how many media people were present?

13 0.25% of 96,081 0.25% is the same as 1/4% 1% of 96,000 1% x 96,000 = 960 960 ÷ 4 = 240 About 240 media people
