The Holy Quran Miracle of Miracles 1
2
What is the Quran? The Verbatim word of God الر ۚ كِتَابٌ أُحْكِمَتْ آيَاتُهُ ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتْ مِنْ لَدُنْ حَكِيمٍ خَبِيرٍ “(This is) a Book, whose verses are made decisive, then are they made plain, from the Wise, All-aware:” (11:1) 2
3
The Quran is a Book of Guidance: Guiding the Intellect
“ …so indeed there has come to you clear proof from your Lord, and guidance and mercy” (6:157) Guiding the intellect through logical premises to sound conclusions (An example): The Argument for Creationism: “Were they created of nothing, or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth…” (52:35)
4
The Quran is a Book of Guidance: Beyond the Limits of the Intellect
…هَٰذَا بَصَائِرُ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ “…these are insights from your Lord and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.” (7:203) The intellect acknowledges a realm beyond the material. However, it also acknowledges that it cannot fathom it completely.
5
The Quran is a Book of Guidance: Spiritual Purification
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُمْ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ “O mankind! there has come to you an direction from your Lord and a cure for what is in the hearts, and guidance and mercy for those who believe…” (10:57) The Quran argues that the only thing that prevents mankind from following their intellect are spiritual diseases. The Quran prescribes cures for these spiritual diseases.
6
Spiritual Purification
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has said: “The hearts of man rust just as iron rusts; and they are polished by way of recitation of the Holy Quran.”
7
What is the Quran? Quran’s Revelation and Compilation
The Holy Quran was compiled during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) It was written in Arabic as it was revealed, using the exact words uttered by the Prophet, whom he in turn had received from Gabriel. Gabriel would take the Words of God and ‘cast them upon the heart of Prophet Muhammad’ Same language, structure and wording maintained up till now Composed of 114 Surahs (chapters) and over Ayahs (verses: literally signs)
8
The Authenticity of the Quran
No likeness to the Quran has ever been produced Therefore, there is only one version of the Quran worldwide today, used by all Muslims. The Quran displays many scientific, numerical and historical miracles ( For more detailed information visit
9
The Quran is Timeless and Universal
“…Say (O Muhammad): "Allah is witness between me and you; This Quran has been revealed to me by inspiration, that I may warn you and all whom it reaches. ," (6:19) وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِلْعَالَمِينَ “It is but a reminder to the worlds.“ (68:52) 9
10
The Quran has an inner and an outer dimension
… وَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا ۖ "And serve God and ascribe none as a partner to Him…” 4:36 أَفَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَٰهَهُ هَوَاهُ … “Have you then considered him who takes his low desire for his god? ,.. 45:23 10
11
A Comparison with other Holy Books
The Quran’s approach is thematic, not chronological. The role-models the Quran presents are: virtuous. The Quran makes no claims that have been scientifically disproved or are logically impossible.
12
Understanding the Quran
Clear and ambiguous ayahs (verses) General and Specific ayahs (verses) Abrogating and Abrogated ayahs (verses)
13
See next page for translation
14
Clear and Ambiguous "He it is who has revealed to you the Book in which are clear revelations, (that is, verses whose meaning is immediately clear and which Muslims use for guidance). They are the substance of the Book and others which are allegorical. But those in whose heart is doubt they follow the allegorical seeking dissension by seeking to explain it. None knows its explanation except God and those who are of sound instruction say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord.” (3:7) 14
15
Examples of Clear and Ambiguous
الرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَىٰ "The Beneficent, One who is established on the throne,“(20:5) كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank (89:22) لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ ۖ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ "Naught is as His likeness; and He is the Hearer, the Seer. ," (42:11) 15
16
General and Specific Ayahs (verses)
Others you will find that wish to gain your confidence as well as that of their people: Every time they are sent back to temptation, they succumb thereto: if they withdraw not from you nor give you (guarantees) of peace besides restraining their hands, seize them and slay them wherever ye get them: In their case We have provided you with a clear argument against them. (4:91)
17
Misconceptions Does the Quran incite violence?
Peace is always the default option in the Quran. However, failing peace, war is endorsed, with strict rules of warfare: Peace treaties should be made if there is an inclination to peace from the enemy Peace treaties are absolutely upheld Enemies who surrender are not to be harmed Members of the enemy’s army who decide to become neutral (i.e. not join either side) are not to be harmed
18
The Quran portraying women
How does the Quran portray women? The story of Adam and Eve in the Quran : Eve is not created from Adam’s rib. Adam and Eve carry an equal share of the blame for disobeying God. Barring discrimination against women in society Female role-model in the Quran : Mary (peace be upon her) has a revolutionary, independent role in society Chastity
19
The Quran and women’s rights
Strict rules regarding divorce to protect women Clear rules of inheritance and rights of ownership for women, giving women financial independence Strict rules on domestic life, including punishments for men who engage in physical and psychological abuse against women
20
On Delivering the Message
وَأَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ "We have revealed unto thee the Remembrance that you may explain to mankind that which has been revealed for them, and that haply they may reflect. ” 16:44
21
Referring to Ahlul Bayt
Allah's wish is but to remove uncleanness far from you, O Folk of the Household, and cleanse you with a thorough cleansing.
22
Prophet Muhammad (saw): “If you want ease and success in this world, the death of a martyr, to be saved on the Day of Judgment, a shade on the Day of heat, and guidance on the Day of straying, then take lessons from the Quran. Surely it is the word of the Merciful, a protection from Satan, and one of the weightiest on the scale of good deeds on the Day of Judgment.”
23
Imam ‘Ali (a.s.): “The house in which the Quran is recited and Allah (swt) is remembered, will receive great blessings, the Angels will be present, and Satan will be distanced from there. In addition, that house will shine for the people of heaven, just like the stars shine for the people on the Earth.”
24
Imam al-Saadiq (a.s.): “One who recites the Quran and is a believing youth, the Quran becomes mixed with his flesh and blood, and Allah (swt) will place him with the noble, devoted Angels. The Quran will act as a barrier (between him and all evil) on the Day of Judgment.”
25
Contemplating/Applying the Quran
Imam al-Sajjad (a.s.): “The verses of the Quran are treasures, and every time this treasure is opened, its content should be well-looked at and considered.”
26
Contemplating/Applying the Quran
Imam al-Saadiq (as): “It is advisable for the reciter of the Quran that when he reaches to a verse from the Quran in which there is a request, that he asks Allah for that matter, or when he reaches to a verse of the Quran in which there is talk about punishment, that he asks Allah for protection from the fire of Hell and the punishment.”
27
Imam ‘Ali (a.s.): “Learn the Quran for it is the best of narrations, and understand it thoroughly for it is the blossom of the hearts. Seek cure with its Light for it is the cure of the hearts. And recite it well for it is the best of narrations.”
28
The Law of Testing Mankind
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنْفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ “And We will try you with some degree of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient.” (2:155)
29
The Law of Gradual Seizure
وَالَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ “Those who deny Our revelations, We shall gradually visit them with punishment in ways they perceive not; .” (7:182-3)
30
The Law of Reflection …فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ نَذِيرٌ مَا زَادَهُمْ إِلَّا نُفُورًا اسْتِكْبَارًا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَمَكْرَ السَّيِّئِ ۚ وَلَا يَحِيقُ الْمَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ ۚ فَهَلْ يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَّا سُنَّتَ الْأَوَّلِينَ ۚ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًا ۖ وَلَنْ تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللَّهِ تَحْوِيلًا … but when there came to them a warner it increased them in naught but aversion. On account of their arrogance in the land and their plotting of Evil, but the plotting of Evil will hem in only their authors. Now are they but looking for the way the ancients were dealt with? But no change will you find in Allah's way, no turning off will you find in Allah's way (of dealing). (35:43)
31
The Law of Helping the Believers
ولَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ رُسُلًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِمْ فَجَاءُوهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَانْتَقَمْنَا مِنَ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا ۖ وَكَانَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نَصْرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ “Surly We sent before you messengers to their people, so they came to them with clear arguments, then We gave the punishment to those who were guilty; and supporting the believers is ever incumbent on Us.” (30:47)
32
Trust not the Oppressors
وَلَا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ وَمَا لَكُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنْصَرُونَ “And do not incline to the oppressors lest the fire touches you; You have no guardians besides Allah, otherwise you shall not be helped.” (11:113)

And as to those who don’t believe in the Hereafter, for them We have prepared a painful doom.
41
The Quran about the Messenger Appears in 42 Ayahs
O you who believe! obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority from among you; then if you quarrel about anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the last day; That is better and more seemly in the end.
42
The Quran about Piety Appears in 15 Ayahs
O you who believe! Be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice, and let not hatred of a people incite you to be unjust; act equitably, that is nearer to piety, and heed Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do. Allah has promised those who believe and do good works: Theirs will be forgiveness and immense reward.
43
The Quran about Obey : Appears in 14 Ayahs
And obey Allah and obey the Messenger, but if you turn back, then upon Our Messenger devolves only the clear delivery of the message. Allah, there is no god but He; and upon Allah, then, let the believers rely.
44
The Quran about the Believes Appears in 28 Ayahs
Surely the Believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened, and put their trust in their Lord; Those who keep up prayer and freely spend out of what We have given them. Those are they who are in truth believers. For them are grades of honor with their Lord, and pardon, and a bountiful provision.
45
The Quran about the Disbelieves Appears in 20 Ayahs
Do you then think that We had created you in vain and that you shall not be returned to Us? So exalted be Allah, the True King; no god is there but He, Lord of the Throne of Grace If anyone invokes, besides Allah, any other god, he has no proof of it; and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the disbelievers will fail to win through!
46
The Quran about Repentance Appears in 69 Ayahs
And when those who believe in Our revelations come unto thee, say: Peace be unto you! Your Lord has prescribed for Himself mercy, that whoso of you does bad deed through ignorance and repents afterward thereof, and does right; for him lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful Thus do We explain the signs in detail: that the way of the sinners may be manifest.
47

And Allah invites to the abode of peace and guides whom He pleases into the right path. To those who do right is a goodly reward- Yea, more than in measure! No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces! Such are the rightful owners of Paradise; they will abide therein.
48
The Quran about the Quran
Nay, I swear by the sites of the stars – And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if you but know – That this is truly a noble Quran In Book well-guarded, Which none shall touch but those who are purified: A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

Harvard University Says Quran Verse Is One of the Greatest Expressions of Justice
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.” Surat An Nisa 4: 135 Described by the institution as one of the greatest expressions of justice in history, Verse 135 of Surah Al Nisaa (The Women Chapter) is dedicated to humanity as the best expression defending and articulating justice. At present, visitors to Harvard, researchers in particular, have the chance to identify themselves with the best articulations of justice since time immemorial.
