Problem Solving 101 How to communicate your answers when problem solving in math

Learning Objectives Communicate in math Learn how to use estimation

Look for Statistics on Facebook and Texting How was math used in the video?

How many text messages do you think all of the grade 8 students in Waterloo Region sent from September 2011 to today?

Communicating a math answer involves the following: Writing Drawing Modelling

3 Part Problem Solving Strategy 1. Beginning - Restate the question in your own words, including all of the information you are given and what you are trying to find 2. Middle - show all of your calculations and use words to describe what you are finding 3. End - conclusion (Therefore...) How many Facebook “friends” would all of the grade 8 students in Waterloo region have?

How many slices of pizza did the grade 8’s in your school eat since September 2010? 3 Part Problem Solving Strategy 1. Beginning - Restate the question in your own words, including all of the information you are given and what you are trying to find 2. Middle - show all of your calculations and use words to describe what you are finding 3. End - conclusion (Therefore...)

Fill in the blank. Explain your reasoning. 3 Part Problem Solving Strategy 1. Beginning - Restate the question in your own words, including all of the information you are given and what you are trying to find 2. Middle - show all of your calculations and use words to describe what you are finding 3. End - conclusion (Therefore...)

If he was able to run the race in 6 minutes per mile, his total time would be 156 minutes He increases his time at a rate of 1 minute per mile, he will increase his time by a total of 26 minutes. Therefore, his total time would be 182 minutes 16 27 38 49 510 611 712 813 914 1015 1116 1217 1318 1419 1520 1621 1722 1823 1924 2025 2126 2227 2328 2429 2530 2631 481 minutes Communication issue - actually means 7 minutes per mile average

In your groups, discuss a time when you were stuck in a traffic jam. How long were you stuck, where were you, etc.

A not so gentle reminder of why math is important...

Longest traffic jam at 100 kilometres (and 10 days) long - Vancouver Sun Chinese authorities are battling to end the world's longest traffic jam, a 100-kilometre-long gridlock stretching from Beijing to the northern province of Inner Mongolia. The jam on the main north-south motorway into the Chinese capital has lasted 10 days and has been blamed on the construction of a road that will not be finished until next month. Trucks joining the back of queue in Inner Mongolia were travelling at an average speed of only 3.5 kilometres a day. 16 How many vehicles are there in a traffic jam on the 401 which is 3 km long Your response is to be clearly communicated Try to show your response using words, diagrams and numbers What is an answer that you know is too low? What is an answer that you know is too high?

How many times will your heart beat in a lifetime? Pair Problem 3 Part Problem Solving Strategy 1. Beginning - Restate the question in your own words, including all of the information you are given and what you are trying to find 2. Middle - show all of your calculations and use words to describe what you are finding 3. End - conclusion (Therefore...)

With your partner, read the criteria of good communication in math answers on pg 344 in the text book From the list, write down the three most important (in your opinion) in your note book

Seth Godin Two things you should learn in school: Solve interesting problems (ones that you can’t search Google for) Lead (It’s a skill, not something you’re born with)

In your groups, discuss ways that you communicate with your friends.

How many hours will someone in the graduating class of 2012 spend on the Internet (inside and outside of school) during the time they are in grades 7 to 8 September 2010 to July 30th 2012 Your response is to be clearly communicated Be sure to use the three criteria you felt was the most important in communicating math problems

How many ping pong balls would it take to fill up the gym?

How many blades of grass do you have in your front yard?

How many hairs do you have on your head? How many blades of grass do we have in the lower field? How many hours will Woodland Park’s graduating class of 2012 spend on the Internet (inside and outside of school) during the time they are in grades 7 to 8 How many ping pong balls would it take to fill up the gym? Choose one on your own... 3 Part Problem Solving Strategy 1. Beginning - Restate the question in your own words, including all of the information you are given and what you are trying to find 2. Middle - show all of your calculations and use words to describe what you are finding 3. End - conclusion (Therefore...)

Level 4 Communication is organized, complete and effectively utilized mathematical language in your explanations. Your result was reasonable and logical. Level 3 Communication is organized, complete and you attempted to utilize mathematical language in your explanations. Your result was reasonable and logical. Level 2 Communication is complete, but unorganized, and you either lacked mathematical language or you incorrectly used it in your explanations. Your result was somewhat reasonable and logical. Level 1 Communication is unorganized, and you either lacked mathematical language or you incorrectly used it in your explanations. Your result was not reasonable or logical.
