LAV construction: Status and overview Matthew Moulson (Frascati) for the LAV Working Group NA62 Photon-Veto Working Group Meeting Brussels, 8 September 2010
2
LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 A2 finishing and handling 2 A2 rotated to horizontal 28 Jul and closed 29 Jul for final vacuum test Leak tested to 8 × 10 −10 mbar ℓ/s, P = 4 × 10 −5 mbar by evening of 30 Jul 28 Jul 03 Aug Rotated again to vertical 03 Aug for final packing ShockLog monitored throughout period of final handling

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 A2 transport and handling 3 A2 shipped in vertical position with same packaging used for A1: mattress, foam inserts, thermal quilt Departure LNF:04 Aug 12:30 Arrival CERN T9:05 Aug 09:30 04 Aug 11:20 04 Aug 12:13 04 Aug 12:26

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 Monitoring of A2 transport to CERN 4 03 Aug 07:00 03 Aug 21:00 04 Aug 11:00 05 Aug 00:00 05 Aug 14:00 02 Aug 17:00 transport Transport and handling monitored with ShockLog 298s 2 data recorders: #20208 - fastened to A2 1 event (1.8 g) during removal of flanges No events during entire period on the road! 1 event (2.2 g) during unloading of A2 from truck bed #20070 – bolted to truck bed Data useless - high-frequency vibration from motor saturated instrument Need to enable low-pass (40Hz?) hardware filter for future measurements A2 temperature during handling and transport
5
LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 A2 installation at T9 5 A2 unloaded and rotated 05 Aug, installed in T9 with final HV flange 09 Aug

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 A2 storage at B185 6 30 Aug 11:00 30 Aug 16:30 30 Aug 22:00 31 Aug 03:30 31 Aug 09:30 A2 temperature during handling and transport 31 Aug 09:30 A2 removed from T9 to B185 30 Aug No packing before transport! Transported in horizontal position Maximum velocity 10 km/h No ShockLog events at all B185 storage area will be used for A3, A4… Need to monitor temperature? 16:20 16:50

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 Block inventory and testing 7 3477 total in V. Palladino’s database 2095 inspected (incl. 412 top layer) 1382 not inspected (all from top layer) 225 bad 310 “on hold” criteria too strict? 1560 good 517 processed 1043 available New LabView interface for oven (see presentation by K. Schimert 14 Jul) Current and rate tests at 3 voltages integrated into production chain Will require: 1. Installation of new divider before status of block is known 2. Adapt oven to use new HV and signal connectors What to do about 1692 blocks of unknown status?

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 Inventory of other materials 9 Tyvek covers 1700 pre-cut sheets, good for all block types Banana plates 80 on-hand at LNF (done through A4) Banana hardware (brackets, columns) Supplies on hand at LNF to complete through A5 Voltage dividers on hand 179 with short cables, 61 with long cables Enough to finish A4 and start on A5 Of these, 116 dividers need to have cables soldered 300 additional dividers on fast order LED assemblies About 80 on hand at LNF (half of A3)

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 A2 cable routing 10 Cable routing very messy at flanges Threaded holes exist to allow installation of additional support structures Solution under study Grille for cable routing is very crowded Height increased from 40 cm to 50 cm for A3 This uses all available space (considering clearance needed for block installation)
11
LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 A3 construction status 11 A3 vessel delivered and rotated into assembly position 06 Aug All needed blocks processed and bananas assembled As of 07 Sep, 7 of 8 bananas of layer 4 (type 14) installed Simultaneously processing blocks/bananas for A4 Goal is to ready A3 for shipping and finish A4 bananas by mid Oct A3 delivery, 06 Aug A3 rotated into position, 06 Aug
12
LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 A4 & A5 vessel status 12 Steel calendered and seam welded, flanges attached Successful preliminary vacuum and residual magnetic field tests Delivery expected 29 Sep (10 working days after original 15 Sep date) No substantial progress since F. Rafaelli’s 14 Jul presentation: Steel cut, edges bevelled, magnetic field mapped Delivery presumably by end Nov but date not yet specified A4 A5 A4 magnetic field mapping, 31 Aug A4 vacuum & leak test, 27 Aug

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 Design and planning A6-A8, A11 13 Competitive bidding procedure (gara) currently open for vessels with technical specifications similar to A1-A5: Recall: A9, A10 have same dimensions as A11, but are made of stainless steel A12 has open geometry—design is totally different Costs considerably increase with size Flanges need to be made from single slab of steel—custom casting Increased transportation costs (wide load) Labor cost is relatively unchanged (same procedures, tools, etc.) Gara closes 15 Sep—result will be known by 21 Sep A6-A8 5 layers ∅ 259 cm A11 4 layers ∅ 299 cm

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Brussels – 8 Sep 2010 Summary & timeline 14 A2 delivered to CERN for test beam at T9 on 05 Aug Currently in storage at B185 All transports smooth, no problems A3 vessel delivered to Frascati 06 Aug All blocks and bananas complete, 1 layer mounted Expect to finish by mid Oct A4 vessel under construction Expect delivery end Sep All bananas ready by mid Oct, can begin mounting when A3 ships A5 vessel delivery planned for end Nov
