This is the BIG IDEA—the thing the book is really about. It’s not the plot. The plot is WHAT happens. Theme is the meaning behind the plot—the reason the author wrote the book..

3 Themes in things you’ve read  Examples of theme in To Kill A Mockingbird: Just because a person is young does not mean that they have nothing to offer.Just because a person is young does not mean that they have nothing to offer. 8 The thing to remember about Universal Theme: If the theme can be found all across the time periods and in different genres of literature, then it is universal theme.
