1 Welcome to Year 1 Phonics and Reading Meeting

2 Aims of the talk: To understand what phonics is and how we teach it in school To share reading and phonic strategies you can use at home to improve reading skills.

5 How much support shall I give my child when reading a word? What if my child does not know the sounds in a word?

6 At the front of reading record we will keep a diary of what children are learning in phonics. Sounds they have been taught will be highlighted off. Please note: When children are taught a new sound we ensure they are able to apply that sound confidently to reading and writing. How will I know what sounds my child knows?

7 Introduce new sound

9 Ensure children recognise the letters that make that sound.

10 Read words with previously learnt sounds and the new sound. six wax fix fox mix

11 Write words with previously learnt sounds and the new sound.

12  Play the high frequency word games.  Practise saying bouncy and stretchy sounds with flashcards provided. (New sound flashcards will be given as children are taught the new sounds in school).  Read with your child each day for 10 minutes. Use the phonics home/ school sheet in reading records. What you can do at home to help us help your child

19  Add in example of breaking words up. Break the words up

20  Once children have sounded out a word they do not know encourage them to re- read the sentence so they comprehend what they have read. Re- reading the sentence
