Discussion… How would you define geography? Have you ever studied geography before? Are there different types of geography? What are the tools of the geographer?

Geography – a definition The study of the Earth’s surface.

Cultural Geography The study of the location and spread of the world’s various cultures. A culture is defined as the way of life of a group of people who share common beliefs and customs.

Economic Geography The study of the location and distribution of economic activities. Economic is defined as relating to or based upon the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.

Environmental Geography The study of interactions between humans and the natural world. It looks at how human societies understand and influence the environment.

Historical Geography The study of patterns and changes in human activities.

Human Geography The study of the patterns of human activity and interaction with the environment.

Political Geography The study of how nations and states organize.

Physical Geography The study of physical features of the Earth and how humans interact with them. Closely linked to earth science (geology).

Urban Geography The study of cities and urban areas.

Tools of the Geographer Map-a flat representation of the Earth. Globe-a three dimensional representation of the Earth. Compass or compass rose-indicates directions Scale-indicates what a unit on the map represents Legend or key-indicates the meaning of symbols on a map.
