4 A Profound Thought “The shortest distance between two people is a story.” What does that mean? Do you buy it?

5 How do we write? Pre-writing Drafting Revising Editing (Rewriting) Publishing Writing is a set of systematic skills that each and everyone of us can and should learn.

6 This I Believe? Grandiose Beginnings—1950s Contemporary Resurrection— 2004 “The goal is not to persuade Americans to agree on the same beliefs. Rather, the hope is to encourage people to begin the much more difficult task of developing respect for beliefs different from their own.”

7 Guidelines for “This I Believe” essay General Guidelines Use proper grammar Use varied syntax Use appropriate diction Do stay on task Specific Guidelines Tell a story about you Be brief (500-600 words) Name your belief Be positive Be personal

8 Where do I begin? 1.Find a partner and discuss your final word/phrase on “Cut the Crap.” 2.What value does that represent? 3.How passionately do you feel regarding that value? 4.Do you feel enough passion to base your personal philosophy around that value? 5.How will you express that value to your readers? Story? Stories?

9 Homework Come to class tomorrow with a core value that you wish to write about. Ms. Skillern and I will ask each of you to name that value as we work in the lab.
