Design Choose a theme for the whole piece (unity)
Be careful about doing anything close to edges – save a 1/2” margin on all sides Remember you cannot have interior shapes (like a donut hole) because they will fall out HOMEWORK: 4 thumbnails sketches -then choose best to cut templates

Stages of Clay SLIP – clay mud PLASTIC – workable, useable clay
LEATHERHARD – slightly hard, firm enough to build with, but will crack when bent DRY LEATHERHARD – dryer still and rigid; will break when bent GREENWARE – bone dry, room temperature, will snap when bent BISQUEWARE – after firing the first time

Adding Textures and Cutouts
Be sure to plan for cutouts and 5 or more textures that go with your theme Keep it simple and not too large or the side may collapse Make your slabs first then cut & add texture before building VIDEO:Textures from found objects

Making Meaning Think of subjects you love that can be shown in parts
Think of the light effects or a day vs. night theme Cityscape Ocean/beach seasons
