You have received a grade below 80 on Anorexia vs. Bulimia assignment and/or the Eating Disorders discussion forum The remediation assignment that goes with this power point is your chance to recoup some of those lost points Use and study the information that follows. Once you have done so complete the remediation assignment and turn it in.

Eating Disorders 2 main disorders: Anorexia Bulimia Anorexia Characterized by low body weight, person starves themselves, greatly restricts intake of food due to control issues, and a irrational desire to be thin. Bulimia Normal body weight is common, characterized by a binge- purge cycle. Binging is taking in abnormally large amounts of food. Purging can be done by throwing up, excessive exercise, etc.

Complications and Symptoms Complications can occur with both disorders. Symptoms Anorexia- yellow, dry skin, fine hair growth all over body, emaciation, anemia, behavior changes, thinning of bones, brittle hair and nails, severe constipation, brain damage, organ failure. Bulimia- Chronically swollen and sore throat, swollen salivary glands, worn tooth enamel, acid reflux, intestinal distress, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance.

Treatment Not just physical or nutritional. Mental aspects must be addressed. Psychotherapy Individual and group therapy Medicines may be used as well (anti- depressants, etc.) Nutritional counseling Medical treatment and monitoring

EDNOS Stands for eating disorders not otherwise specified. Example is Binge Eating Disorder. Patients with this disorder display some bulimic tendencies, but do not purge

Causes Often underlying mental or emotional issues Person may feel like they have no control in their life and are trying to exert control Other issues like OCD or depression can manifest as eating disorders Distorted sense of body image Some say this is due to media influence
