I-1 will be collected tomorrow (get it done if you have not completed it already) I-2 due Thursday
2
Do Now: ◦ What do you think of when you think of the Industrial Revolution? List any terms, ideas or images that come to mind. ◦ How was the Industrial Revolution different from previous revolutions we’ve learned about in this class like the French Revolution or Latin American Revolutions?
3
Industrial Revolution: The burst of major inventions, technical changes and economic expansion that occurred in certain industries in Europe between 1750-1850. Move from hand production of goods at home to machine production of goods in factories. Started in Great Britain, and eventually spread to the rest of Europe and the United States.
4
3. What three reasons does the documentary give for England’s industrialization ◦ Colonies ◦ Rich deposits of iron and coal ◦ Many rivers
5
4. Which two industries were the first to industrialize? ◦ Textiles (clothing) ◦ Iron
6
5. What were the two earliest sources of energy for early machines? ◦ Wind ◦ Water
7
6. What effect did water powered machines like the spinning jenny and power looms have on cottage (home based) industries? Why? ◦ Cottage Industry – Spinners and weavers working in their homes to turn wool into thread and yarn and produce goods for cloth merchants. Eventually, new machines like the spinning jenny can do the work of 16 people working on 16 spinning wheels. What will happen to cottage industries? Why?
8
Cottage Industry ◦ People worked in their homes at their own pace. ◦ Cloth merchants had a close relationship with their workers, took an interest in their wellbeing. Factory Industry ◦ Owners and workers had little contact ◦ Greater production demands, more tiring, fewer breaks. ◦ Terrible working conditions.
9
They were unreliable
10
Steam engine uses coal for fuel. Now factories don’t have to built near water. Provides humanity with an unlimited source of power!
11
Coal = To run steam engines, ironmaking, heating Iron = Make tools, cookware, machines Why did the growth of the coal industry and the iron industry feed each other?
12
Factories were built in areas where iron and coal were available. These areas became industrial cities. ◦ What were the conditions like in these cities?
13
More roads, bridges and canals. Invention of the railroad (a steam engine on wheels!) Mr. Brown would argue that this is one of most important inventions in human history. Why?
14
Importance of railroads: Spark industrial growth, create jobs (railroad workers, miners who provide iron for the tracks and coal for the steam engines). Cheaper transportation boosts many industries (agriculture, fishing); people move to cities
15
Based on what we have discussed so far, do you think the new inventions and technology of the Industrial Revolution were a blessing or a curse? Provide three specific examples to back up your argument.
