History of St. Joe’s summer teen mission trip… Since 2010 our Youth Ministry has organized a teen mission trip to the Appalachia region through Appalachia Service Project (2010-14) and Catholic Mission Trips (2015). 2010-14: We started with two adults & 3 teens (2010) and got as big as 74 teens and 32 adults on a trip. We went to Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee with Appalachian Service Trip (ASP). In 2015, 55 teens & 24 adults went to Harlan, KY with Catholic Mission Trips. For the 2016 trip, we will again go to Harlan, KY and we are doing it on our own this year!

2016 St. Joe’s Summer Teen Mission trip: Appalachian Mission Trip (AMT) Instead of using an organization such as ASP or CMT we will be running the trip on our own! The mission of this trip: 1. Building a stronger relationship with God 2. Building a community with each other and the Appalachian people. 3. Repairing Appalachian homes. Before we go: Required monthly meetings for formation, team building, and basic construction training for everyone. All adult leaders will go through the archdiocesan background check process and will be required to attend additional monthly planning meetings.

On the trip: We will go back to Harlan, KY and stay at the same church we stayed at with CMT in 2015, Holy Trinity. Transportation: will rent 12-passenger vans & 8- passenger SUVs. Only adult leaders will be allowed to drive the vehicles. We will sleep in classrooms and have shower facilities there. The church will coordinate finding the jobs for us. We will have the same cooks we had in 2015. There will be daily morning mass and evening formation. We plan to have college age young adults play an instrumental part in the formation on the trip.

Serve for one week in the summer Trip next summer is from 7/23 – 30 2 adult group leaders for every 5 to 6 teens Minimum age: 14 by 7/23/16 We can take up to 70 teens & 28 adults/young adults (14 teams)

Cost of the program Cost per teen will be a minimum of $750 This money can be obtained through stock donations or teen payment (this is NEW!) Prizes will be awarded for those who raise the most over the $750. What is AMT Stock? An opportunity for family and friends to help support you on your mission trip. This year, we will not have online payment availability. Payments must be made by check.

Next Steps: Registration packets for teens, adults & young adults need to be completed and turned in to the parish office by December 31, 2015. We will consider when applications are submitted as one of the factors when filling spots on the trip, so get these in early! Decisions will be made by January 11 on trip participation. Monthly meetings for formation, team building and training begin with a formation meeting on January 24 (all dates can be found on the application).
