7 Water Largest component of nearly all living things Solution in which all nutrients are dissolved or suspended for transport Reacts with compounds to break down food into products that can be used

8 Protein Main component of muscles and tissues Made out of amino acids Used continuously Major sources include soybeans, peanuts, cottonseed, and linseed Oil meal

9 Carbohydrates Sugars and starches Provide energy and heat Energy obtained is used for growth, maintenance, work, reproduction, and lactation Sugars (simple and compound) Found in plant materials Corn, wheat, barley, oats, and rye

10 Minerals Many functions: Skeleton Soft tissue and fluids 15 minerals that are essential to animal health: Calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chlorine, potassium, sulfur, iron, iodine, cobalt, copper, fluorine, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, zinc

11 Vitamins Available in roughages and concentrates Catalysts for body processes Part of normal feeds of animals

12 Fat Improves palatability, flavor, texture, and energy levels Increase milk production and fatten meat animals
