Statement of need Greater diversity of abilities among our F1 students in recent years Over 90% of the F1 students come from Chinese primary schools. Over 90% of the F1 students come from Chinese primary schools. Under the current 3-banding system, the Band 1 students are the top 33% instead of the top 20% as that of the previous 5-banding system. Most of them find it difficult to adapt to the English learning environment in an EMI school, particularly with the existing big class size and the insufficient exposure to English Language in their daily life. Special Grouping for learning English in F1 The main objectives include: helping F1 students adapt to the English learning environment in an EMI school helping F1 students adapt to the English learning environment in an EMI school catering for learner diversity catering for learner diversity developing students’ confidence & mastery skills in learning English developing students’ confidence & mastery skills in learning English

Class Structure in 2006-2007 F1 & 2 (mixed abilities) Students were randomly allocated into 5 classes with 40+ students in each class. Students were randomly allocated into 5 classes with 40+ students in each class.F3 The top 80-90 students were randomly allocated into 2 classes (i.e. F3 A & B). The top 80-90 students were randomly allocated into 2 classes (i.e. F3 A & B). The remaining students were randomly allocated into 3 classes, each of which was split into 2 groups for language learning (i.e. 6 groups of 20 students). The students of these 3 classes are randomly allocated into 4 groups with approximately 30 students in each group.

English Language Learning Groups of junior forms in 08-09 Hopefully with the support of the SFXC Foundation, an additional English teacher can be recruited so that the scheme could be extended to F2.
