2 Writing A Physics Laboratory Report 6 sections Each section should be clearly titled in your personal lab report: Abstract Planning A Planning B Data Collection Data Processing Conclusion & Evaluation

3 ~ 50 words explains purpose of experiment States specific results including trendline relationship Includes significance ratio (where applicable)

4 Research topic, provide relevant background information, rationale for hypothesis. Cite at least 1 reference. List control variables, name IV, DV quantitative hypothesis (include relationship between variables and order ex. Inverse square) sentence and paragraph format.

5 List all materials and equipment used to do the experiment. Include quantities of each item. Write down, in recipe style, the protocol you followed in doing your lab. Use past passive tense, describe how CV’s are to be controlled

6 Include all tables related to the lab. Include control variable measurements important for replicating your lab (with uncertainties). Make sure you have units and measurement uncertainties in all appropriate column headings

7 Make a graph Include labels and units Include error bars when possible Include title

8 Describe the relationship, significance ratio, and goodness of fit (R 2 value) between your variables as indicated by your graph. Explain if the hypothesis was supported. Compare to literature where possible. Answer any questions given to you in the lab. Include at sources of error and improvements. Be explicit about improving accuracy of measurements. NOTE: write the conclusion in sentence and paragraph format.

9 Significance Ratio 1.Determine the range (R) of your times. 2.Determine the largest of your  n-1 values (S) 3.Calculate Significance Ratio (R / S) 4.If significance ratio is > 4 your data is probably significant. % Error Formula 1.Find the predicted (P) value from your hypothesis. 2.Find the A value from your equation (m = A) 3.% error = 100|(A-P)/A|

10 The lab report is marked out of 100 points. It is due at the late bell 3 days after you complete data collection. 10 points will be deducted per day for late lab reports. Please take this seriously. Your lab grade is the single most important component of your final grade in this course!
