Context - Historical HE in the UK has a long standing history of external examining, the effectiveness and purpose has been reviewed periodically Codified in 2000 by the QAA (Code of Practice on External Examining) (revised in 2012) ‘The Future of Higher Education’ White Paper (2003) reinforced the importance of training and support for examiners 8

Context – Current Climate HEA undertakes review of External Examiner arrangements in the UK on behalf of HEFCE to inform the Quality Assessment Review – Future Approaches to Quality Assessment which recommended enhancing the current system that includes clarified roles and remit, systematic training and organised appointment process, managed by the sector but independent of individual providers. 9
