What was the Baroque? ► The Baroque began in Rome around 1600 ► It was a style that could be found in sculpture, painting, literature and painting ► The Baroque was encouraged by Roman Catholic officials that wanted to promote religion in the arts (Counter-Reformation)

Art ► Art was supposed to speak to the illiterate, not the well-educated ► Patrons were most popular in Rome ► Some famous artists from this time include the following:

Sculptures ► Tended to show movement ► Included water fountains ► Multiple viewing angles

Architecture ► Had a good deal of domes and colonnades ► Supposed to represent the triumph of the Church and state ► Ludwigsburg Palace
