Australians throw out $5.2 billion worth of food every year Up to 50% of food is wasted from paddock to plate

$1.1 billion dollars of fruit and vegetables are wasted in Australia every year More than ¼ of the water we use worldwide is taken to grow over one billion tonnes of food that nobody eats! 53,000 tonnes of bananas are wasted every year in Australia

1.2 million Australians do not have access to affordable, safe, nutritious food

What is causing Food Insecurity?

FI 20-40% more likely to be overweight or obese (Burns, 2005) 12.6 million Australians are overweight or obese (AIHW, 2010) Low income Victorians less likely to consume 2 fruit and 5 veg. (AIHW, 2010) 104,000 homeless community members (Counting the Homeless, 2006) 2.5 times exposure to fast food in low-SES (Burns, 2005) EFR use Australia wide: 2 million? (Food Bank Australia, 2012) Food access and equity

SecondBite aims to bridge the gap between food waste and hunger… …by allowing one to serve as a solution to the other.

In 2012 SecondBite will redistribute over 2.5 million kilograms of surplus fresh food. Providing 5 million nutritious meals for vulnerable people. Preventing the emission of over 15 million kg of Co2 gasses With 610 volunteers, 40 staff and 14 refrigerated vans. To over 480 community organisations across Australia
