Chapter 11 Chi-Square Procedures 11.2 Contingency Tables; Association

Titanic Mortality Data This table is referred to as a contingency or two- way table because it relates two categories of data. The row variable is survival status because each row in the table describes the survival status of a group. The column variable is gender. Each box inside the table is referred to as a cell

A marginal distribution of a variable is a frequency or relative frequency distribution of either the row or column variable in the contingency table.

EXAMPLE Determining Frequency Marginal Distributions Find the frequency marginal distributions for survival status and gender from the Titanic data.

EXAMPLE Determining Relative Frequency Marginal Distributions Find the relative frequency marginal distributions for survival status and gender from the Titanic data.

A conditional distribution lists the relative frequency of each category of a variable given a specific value of the other variable in the contingency table.

EXAMPLE Constructing a Conditional Distribution Find the conditional distribution of the variable survival status by gender for the Titanic data.

EXAMPLE Drawing a Bar Graph of a Conditional Distribution Using the results from the previous example, draw a bar graph that represents the conditional distribution of survival status by gender.
