Few Reminders As you narrow down category Paper submitted 2 weeks early to contest Website must use Weebly format via NHD.org and be submitted 1 week prior to contest Papers-individual only Exhibit has 500 word limit; however, does not include primary source info on the board Performance is least represented category while websites and exhibits are most represented at contest

Few Reminders As you narrow down your topic Topic should be thematic, not a chronological summary Projects MUST BE centered around a thesis No-Titanic Yes- Third class citizens on the Titanic faced a more fatal loss than those in first class due to societal classifications in the early 1900’s. No-Japanese Internment Camps Yes-Due to the executive order of FDR during WW II, many Japanese- American citizens faced a violation of their civil rights guaranteed to them in the Constitution.

How To Be a Winner! Thorough bibliography with a wealth of primary and secondary resources Use of an interview-secure now! (Consider contacting professors of history at UIndy, IUPUI, Butler….) Clear and unique thesis Specific topic Showing your project as a clear analysis and not a summary Presenting your topic as a story with a beginning and end

Organization Segmentation -Putting together the different workable parts Orientation -Left to right as if we were reading a story or broken up into timed scenes if doing a performance or documentary Explanation -Why is this on your board or in your project? It should be obvious or there should be captions.

Qualities of a Good NHD Project 60% Historical quality -Accurate, analysis and interpretation, placed in a historical context, wide, balanced research 20% Relation to theme -Clearly related (you cannot be too shy about this… be overt and obvious) -Significance of topic 20% Clarity of presentation -Visual impact, organization, creativity

Today’s Goal- Choosing topic and category Does your topic show that your person -Articulates a vision -Motivates others -Makes effective decisions -Willing to confront tough issues -Impacts history If not, consider a different topic.
