2 The students will evaluate Hoover’s initial response to the Depression by describing the measures Hoover took to help the economy and ease people’s suffering Announcement: Chapter 14 Test this Thursday Due: Chapter 14 Vocabulary on Monday Drill: Analyze the political cartoon on page 497 and answer the following 1. Why are all the figures in the cartoon pointing at Hoover? 2. What does Hoover’s characterization suggest about his attitude toward his accusers?

4 Hoover Takes Cautious Steps Asked employers not to cut wages or lay off workers and labor not to strike or demand higher wages Democrats win in 1930 Congressional Elections Some farmers burned crops/dumped milk Blocked roads to stop delivery of food Question: What were some of Hoover’s key convictions about government?

5 Boulder Dam and other Government Projects $800 million dollar stimulus to build roads, dams Glass-Steagall Banking Act Federal Home Loan Bank Act Reconstruction Finance Corporation Gassing the Bonus Army Veterans of WWI wanted their bonus now, not in 1945 Once the bill did not pass, some protesters stayed Those that stayed were gassed Question: Why was the Bonus Army incident so damaging to Hoover’s image?
