6 WHAT ARE INJURIES Intentional Injuries Violence Suicide Injuries are not accidents, they can be prevented by changing the environment, individual behavior, products, social norms, laws and/or governmental and institutional policy.

10 MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY Two thirds of unintentional injury deaths are due to motor vehicle crashes. Traffic related injuries also include those sustained while walking, riding a bicycle, or riding a motorcycle. Lets begin our unit focusing on motor vehicle safety!!

12 WHICH OF THE FOLLOW MOTOR VEHICLE ACTIONS CAUSE THE MOST DEATHS? 1. Drinking and Driving 2. Distracted Driving 3. Not wearing a seatbelt 4. Having lots of friends in the car

13 MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY According to the CDC, while many driving deaths are due to the use of alcohol, driving while distracted is the leading cause of death related to automobile crashes. 14 DISTRACTED DRIVING Distracted driving is any activity that can pull a drivers attention away while driving. All distractions endanger the safety of the driver, passengers, and bystanders. EXAMPLES: Texting Using a cell phone/smart phone Eating and drinking Talking to passengers Grooming (nail polish) Reading (maps) Using navigation system Adjusting radio, AC, CD player

15 DISTRACTED DRIVING Because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction. LET”S TAKE A CLASS POLL: SEE MI MERIT PP

16 WHAT DISTRACTS YOUR DRIVING? Take a minute to share with your partner the distractions that impacts your driving the most.

18 MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY When seatbelts were first installed in cars, many people did not use them. Now, most people do. What caused people to change their behavior?

19 SAFETY POLICIES Answers: Laws mandating seatbelt use Enforcement laws Data indicating benefits of wearing a seatbelt Media campaigns Television PSA Road signs

20 SAFETY POLICIES More and more, states are enacting safety laws regarding texting and cell phone use while driving. Some states allow police officers to stop drivers who are using cell phones (City of Chicago uses cameras) However, we are not anywhere close to the level of compliance with these laws as we are with seat belts.

22 THINK ABOUT IT Why do you think people continue to choose to use cell phones while driving? What do you think it will take to get people, adults, and teens, to take this dangerous behavior seriously?

23 CLOSURE National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations slogan is: One Text Or Call Could Wreck It All Homework: Create a slogan similar to this one, regarding motor vehicle safety Investigate the Michigan State Law and consequences for breaking the law regarding phone use while driving. Then, respond to the reflection question: Do you think our state laws regarding distracted driving are adequate? Too severe? Too lenient? Explain your answer.
