Something that represents something else, either by association or by resemblance Writers insert symbols into their writing to allude to a feeling, mood or attitude without directly stating the perspective or mood intended. Symbolism is supplemental to the story.

Denotation-literal definition/dictionary Connotation-all the associations we have with a particular word Thin vs skinny vs slender have the same meaning (denotation) but have different connotation

Consider the following images: What is their literal definition? What associations or additional meanings do they have? What emotions or memories do they evoke?

ReRead “August Heat” On a sheet of paper that you can turn in to me: Find as many examples of symbolism in the text as you can Can you find other literary devices we have discussed? (narrator, foreshadowing, simile and metaphor, allusion)
