Its current position is about 400km east of Africa separated by the Mozambique Channel. In 1960, the country became a fully independent country called the Malagasy Republic. Nearly all of Madagascar was once covered in forests but much of the land has now been cleared. Areas of Madagascar is covered in a rich, red soil which is suitable for farming. Over three-quarters of the island species cant be found anywhere in the world.

From 1999 to 2010, scientists discovered 615 new species in Madagascar, including 41 mammals and 61 reptiles. Madagascar as some of the world's most interesting animals. About 75% of the species found in Madagascar live nowhere else on the planet. { On the next slide there is pictures of some off the animals.}

Houses are rectangular and have steeply angled roofs. Most houses are made of either mud or woven matting supported by poles. In the eastern forest, they are built of split bamboo.

The colours of the flag represent Madagascar's history, yearning for independence, and traditional classes. Red and white were the colours of the Merina kingdom. Green was the colour of the Hover.
