Once the Spanish government realized the extent of the “discoveries” of their exploration, they decided to settle the new land. They brought with them many different foods, animals, and ideas from their homeland. This was not exactly cultural borrowing. Instead the Spanish wanted to exert (to apply with great effort) their control over the people of the new land and force Spanish cultural ideas upon them. No matter the original intent of the Spanish, some of their cultural contributions are still a part of Texan and American life today. These contributions are gifts to our society. (The Spanish word for gifts is “regalos”, the title of this lesson.) lemons and limes pumpkins corn apples Catholic Church horses cows turkeys
