Welcome Back Unit 4: Energy, Heat and Motion
2
Do Now: What does it mean to “reset”? How are you going to “reset” for the New Year as a student?
3
Expectations: Be prompt Be prepared Be productive Be proactive Be professional
4
Rules: Follow all directions the first time they are given RESPECT Remember, you are here to LEARN
5
Concept Map (Review) Take the next 5 minutes to fill in this concept map as thoroughly as you can. Remember to use formulas, examples, pictures (if necessary) ENERGY
6
Practice Problems on Energy Take the next 10 minutes to answer the review problems on the half sheet of paper in your notes. We will review the problems after 10 minutes
7
Energy Conversions! Energy changes from one form or another all the time! You use your hand (mechanical energy) to turn on a lightbulb (electromagnetic energy).
8
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Energy is converted (changed) from one form to another all the time. In many conversions, heat is released.
9
Example: Roller Coaster At position 1, the roller coaster is at rest. What type of energy does it have? Once it starts moving, what type of energy does it have at position 2? What type of energy conversion occurs here? (from 1 to 2) 1 2 3
10
Example: Roller Coaster At position 1, the roller coaster is at rest. What type of energy does it have? Once it starts moving, what type of energy does it have at position 2? What type of energy conversion occurs here? (from 1 to 2) 1 2 3 Potential energy kinetic energy
11
Example: Pendulum At position 1, what type of energy does the pendulum have? Once released from position 1, what type of energy does the pendulum have? What is the energy conversion taking place here?
12
Example: Pendulum At position 1, what type of energy does the pendulum have? Once released from position 1, what type of energy does the pendulum have? What is the energy conversion taking place here? Potential energy kinetic energy
13
Your turn, identify the energy conversion! 1.A car engine burns gasoline (______ energy) to push the pistons. The pistons then turn the crankshaft (________ energy) 2.Clap your hands together. 3.Turning on the lights 4.An alarm clock going off at 5:30am
14
Your turn, identify the energy conversion! 1.A car engine burns gasoline ( chemical energy) to push the pistons. The pistons then turn the crankshaft (mechanical energy) 2.Clap your hands together. Kinetic sound 3.Turning on the lights electrical light 4.An alarm clock going off at 5:30am electrical light and sound

More Practice/Exit Ticket Complete the exit ticket that is passed out. Make sure you read each question carefully. You may use your notes While you are completing your exit ticket, you will receive your grade for your Science Fair Project. All comments will about Science Fair grades will be discussed at the end of class.
